I. A Brief Introduction to Major of Translation (English)

The undergraduate program for major of translation (English) was set up in 2009. The program has a strong faculty which boasts distinctive characteristics of teaching and good teaching results. The core course of the program “Theory and Techniques of Translation” is honored as a quality course at provincial level (2007— ). The program has rich library resources, advanced audio-visual teaching facilities, and translation teaching and training facilities. Now it has a CAT lab, a simultaneous interpretation conference room, and a simultaneous interpretation teaching/training lab.

II. Educational Objectives

This program aims at cultivating high-quality practical talents who will be engaged in E/C translation and/or interpretation as well as other foreign-related works, and cultivating basic academic talents who will be engaged in E/C translation studies and research of translation-related disciplines. Besides, the program also offers a student pool for MA programs of English Department of School of Foreign Language at CCNU.

III. Basic Requirements

The students of the program are expected to be equipped with good ideological and moral cultivation, a confident and open attitude, team spirit, and the ability to make correct judgment. They should have a good command of English language skills and information skills, knowledge about literature and culture, as well as encyclopedic knowledge. They should possess innovative spirit, autonomous learning ability and life-long learning ability, scientific way of thinking, and down-to-earth pioneering spirit. Besides, they should also possess good ability to express themselves and communicate with others, good health and good mental ability.

The graduates of the program are expected to acquire the following knowledge and skills:

1. They should possess solid Chinese/English language foundations, good ability in speaking and writing, and in translation and interpretation.

2. They should have a good knowledge about society, literature, culture, politics, economy, foreign trade, and science and technology of English-speaking countries.

3. They should be qualified for such works in foreign-related organizations such as oral/written translation, foreign exchange, publicity, and publication.

4. They should possess the ability for further studies in E/C translation, literature, linguistics and other related disciplines.

Students are required to earn 3 credits for Innovation or Business Start-up during their 1st – 8th semesters. They can earn 1 credit for each of the items in the following list:

X. Notes
1. Students are required to earn 12 credits for Elective General Education Courses, among which 4 credits are for courses of Sciences, 2 credits for courses of Arts and the rest 6 credits are autonomously earned by the students.
2. The courses of major of translation consist of Common Courses (30 credits), Required General Education Courses (21 credits), Required Major Courses (23 credits), Elective Major Courses (8 credits), and Elective General Education Courses (18 credits, among which 12 for optional elective course and 6 for cross-major courses), totaling 100 credits.
3. Courses marked with * are elective courses offered with priority.
4. Major divisions (marked by the 5th digit in Course Number): 1-Literature, 2-Linguistics, 3-Translation, 4-Teaching and Education.
5. This major requires one year’s internship, which is carried out in the 7th semester (16 credits) and 8th semester (8 credits) respectively. During the internship in the 8th semester. TEM 8 and graduation thesis should also be completed.
6. Students are allowed to graduate and are granted Bachelor of Arts if they have earned the designated number of credits (100 credits, with additional 3 credits for Community Education) within the designated time span, fulfilled all the practice/internship requirements, obtained the certificate for the designated foreign language test, and passed their thesis defense.
