School of Music
The School of
Music was founded in 1929. It was originally the Music Group of School of
Education of Huachung University, which was formally named as Department of
Music of Huazhong Teachers College in 1953. In 1986, the School of Music
started enrolling students. Since 2000, the Department of Music has opened the
major of Music Performance on the basis of major of Music Education. In 2004,
it was renamed the School of Music. The school started to enroll foreign
students in 2006.
The School
consists of Department of Vocal Music, Department of Piano, Department of Instrumental
Music, Department of Dance, Department of Theory and Composition, Institute of
Music Studies, Section of Social Education and Music Practice, Chinese Art of
Chorus Research Center, and Hubei Provincial Music Education Training
Demonstration Center. It has over 200 pianos, including Steinway Piano and
Boston Piano which value more than 1 million Chinese Yuan each. It also has
digital pianos and establishes the Music Reference Material and Audio-Visual
Center.
In recent years,
the School of Music has cultivated a great number of excellent talents of music
education and music performance, who have won various prizes in the competition
of different levels. For example, the Tiankong Female Chorus won the second
prize of 2008 CCTV Television Grand Prix for the Young Singer and the first
prize of gold medal in the female chorus group of the 10th Chinese Choral
Festival and our dancing performance won the gold medal in the 6th "Lotus
Cup" School Dance Contest, as well as in the 2nd National College Student
Art Show. Our thesis has won the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Prize. The Tiankong
Female Chorus and our Art Troupe were on show tour in the Confucius Institutes
in foreign countries and were highly acclaimed. Many of our teachers have got
prizes in the Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music, the Wenhua Award, CCTV
Television Grand Prix for the Young Singer, etc. The school has also undertaken
and accomplished a number of national and provincial research projects and has
made great academic achievements in the field of Music.
