CCNU has a history of more than one hundred year since its establishment in 1903. It admitted postgraduate students since 1950s. With the promulgating of Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees in 1981, CCNU was among the first higher institutions entitled to offer doctoral and postgraduate degrees. After three decades' efforts, the postgraduate education of CCNU has gained an outstanding development.

By the end of 2011, the university offers 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 33 first- level disciplines authorized to confer Master's degree, 94 doctoral programs and 184 postgraduate programs. It has diverse branches of learning such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art, which all together comprise a balanced and comprehensive curriculum. CCNU also made a leapfrog development in National Key Disciplines and programs, which started from one (Chinese Modern and Contemporary History) in 1988 to 8 disciplines (newly added: Chinese and Foreign Political Systems, Scientific Socialism and International Communist Movement, Basic Principles of Marxism, Education Theory, Chinese Linguistics and Philology, Theoretical Physics and Pesticide Science) and one National Key Program (Theory of Literature and Art). Moreover, there are 8 primary subjects accorded key subject status of Hubei Province and 12 secondary key subjects of Hubei Province, which outnumbers most other higher institutions in Hubei Province. With the support of "211 Project" and "985 Project" Construction programs as well as much importance attached to the newly developed and applied disciplines, CCNU has already developed distinct advantages and improved its hardware and software in nurturing postgraduate students.

The university boasts 2 national bases for arts' and science' basic discipline talent development and scientific research, one national engineering research center, 3 key research bases in human and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 2 Ministry of Education key laboratories, one Ministry of Education engineering research center, one culture research center of the Ministry of Culture and one sports culture research center of the General Administration of Sport. Now, CCNU offers 10 different mobile post-doctoral posts and it also offers 14 master's degrees, such as degrees in Education, Public Management, Law, Agricultural Extension, MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages), MTI (Master of Translation and Interpretation), Sports, Art, Business Administration, Social Working, Applied Statistics, Journalism and Communication, Engineering and Applied Psychology etc. as well as doctoral degree in Education.

CCNU boasts a talented and distinguished teaching staff that are experienced in teaching and dedicated to working. Right now, it has more than 3800 teaching and auxiliary staff, among whom over 1500 are full-time teachers, over 900 professors and associate professors, over 267 doctoral supervisors and 616 master supervisors. In addition, there are one academician from the Academy of Sciences, 2 senior professors, 2 members of state's Thousands Talents Program, 2 Changjiang scholars, 41 members of New Century Excellent Talents in support programs of the Ministry of Education, 4 gain the financial support from the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 members of the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council, 7 members of the State Outstanding Talents Project of the 21st century, one winner of the National Distinguished Teacher Prizes and 2 innovative research groups of Ministry of Education and 4 groups of Hubei Province.

CCNU is excellent in research and it has already become a renowned institution of higher learning which emphasizes teacher education and basic learning in both arts and sciences. In the recent five years, it had gained diverse bidding or fund programs of national level.

Until now, over 20,000 postgraduate students had received master's degree from CCNU and made their own contributions in many fields. This university always puts the competency and qualities of students at the first place. As a result, there are 6 dissertations were awarded as the national excellent doctoral dissertations. With the scale of postgraduate students enlarging, there are over 10,000 postgraduates of different kinds in the university.
